The regenerator - scarifier allows for cleaning the surface of the lawn by removing moss and cut grass, or creating longitudinal grooves to encourage root branching, depending on the depth setting. 

Thatching causes excessive development of the grass root system in the top inches of soil, which increases susceptibility to diseases. 

Proper cleaning of the grooves is achieved by the shape of the blades and by rotating in the opposite direction to the tractor's advance. 

Precision adjustment is done by operating the front/rear rollers.
