Volterra is a wonderful place to discover by bike: just a few pedal strokes and you're on your way from medieval alleyways to panoramic views of the Tuscan hills. From the town center, you can cycle along the ramparts, through lively squares, before the town gradually fades away behind cypress trees and rolling fields.

For an easy ride, choose the small secondary roads around the town, ideal for riding in peace and quiet and stopping whenever you feel like it: a viewpoint over the valley, a stone hamlet, an olive grove bathed in light. Culture buffs can also combine pedaling with heritage breaks, returning quietly to the historic center for a stroll in the late afternoon.
