Laino Borgo has ancient roots:
The region was already inhabited during the Enorian and Lucanian periods, thanks to its strategic location in the Lao Valley.
In the Middle Ages, two distinct centres developed: Laino Castello (on the hill, fortified) and Laino Borgo (downstream, more focused on trade and agriculture).
Over time, Laino Borgo became the more vibrant centre, thanks to its proximity to the river and transport links.
The village is home to places of worship of great value, including:
The parish church of Santo Spirito, in Piazza Navarro, adorned with paintings and artistic treasures that are also much appreciated by visitors.
The Sanctuary of the Chapels, described by critics as ‘one of the most beautiful in Calabria’, open 24 hours a day and a place of pilgrimage and contemplation.
These sites bear witness to the deep religious devotion and cultural continuity of the Laino community. Laino Borgo is now famous for its frescoes, considered by many visitors to be amongst the finest in southern Italy.

As a lover of mural art, I have seen and photographed those in Grottaglie, Savoia, Satriano, Sant’Angelo le Fratte, Piano Vetrale, Borgo Croce, Diamante and Placanica. I can say without hesitation that those in Laino Borgo are the most beautiful in the whole of Southern Italy. What’s more, they are well organised and signposted, making it easy to follow the route without risking missing a single one.

The village is full of charm, but the River Lao is even more beautiful; you can walk along it on a path that allows you to immerse yourself in the heart of nature and a protected ecosystem.

Laino Borgo is a small municipality in the province of Cosenza, Calabria. It is a mountainous region. It is a simple place offering many extreme sports, such as rafting, amongst others. In this municipality, I stayed at the B&B ‘A CASALE DELL’ARTISTA’ at C. da Canica, 12, in the Pollino National Park. We loved the place. It’s a two-storey house with bedrooms, bathrooms and a very well-equipped kitchen and living room. The couple running it are very friendly and gave us a warm welcome. Breakfast is included. I’d recommend it to everyone. It’s well worth it! And I miss it. It’s a shame I live in Brazil. Here, the photos of the town and the accommodation are mixed together; I couldn’t manage to take separate photos of just the B&B, but the house has a balcony full of little pots hanging from it.
