The “Pupa del capo” represents the Greek goddess Demeter, goddess of agriculture, harvests, and fertility, as well as of the sky and the seasons. Her grief for the loss of Persephone caused Winter and famine; while her return brought Spring and Summer. She holds in her hands bundles of wheat and poppies, symbols of the earth and harvests. The Pupa is an Art Nouveau icon, which once adorned the entrance of an old bakery in the Capo market in Palermo; it has become a symbol for the market. It was made as a wedding gift for the wife of Salvatore Morello, the original owner of the bakery. Currently, the artwork can be found, after restoration, at the Palazzo Ajutamicristo.
