We tell you more about this resort!
Renting a snowshoe in Chalmazel is the ideal way to discover the Monts du Forez at your own pace. Between fir forests and high, wind-beaten stubble fields, the scenery changes in just a few steps. Set off from the village or resort, plunge into the silence, and very quickly the panoramic views open out over the Puys chain and, in fine weather, as far as the Alps.
The season generally runs from December to March, depending on snow conditions. The best outings are in the morning, when the snow is fresh and the light crystal-clear after a fall. If it's breezy on the ridges, prefer loops in the undergrowth; in stable weather, aim for the plateaus around the Col du Béal and, for the more curious, the outskirts of Pierre-sur-Haute. Beware of fog, which can fall quickly over the high stubble fields.
Whether you're a family, a beginner or a seasoned hiker, the signposted itineraries offer a variety of options: short, fun loops in the forest, or more demanding routes to the jasseries for a breath of fresh air. Before you set off, check the weather and local snow reports, make sure the trails are open, and stay on the trails to protect the peat bogs and wildlife. Equip yourself with warm layers, waterproof footwear, gaiters and wide poles. Slip in a hot drink, an offline map or app, a charged phone, and head out early in the afternoon if you're aiming for sunset.
Snowshoe hire in Chalmazel is simple and convenient on site. Have your equipment adjusted, ask for advice on the day's itineraries, and allow 2-3 hours for your first outing. After the effort, treat yourself to a gourmet break and discover local products, such as Fourme de Montbrison, to round off a memorable winter's day.
