Looking for snow from the Ville Rose? Renting snowshoes in Toulouse is the easy way to enjoy a true winter interlude without having to travel far. Pick up your equipment in town, then head for the nearby Pyrenees for a day or weekend of fresh air and panoramic views.
In less than two hours, the Luchonnais, Comminges and Ariège valleys offer superb marked itineraries. Fir forests, open plateaus, silent clearings... The Plateau de Beille, Le Chioula and Le Mourtis are ideal for beginners, while experienced hikers prefer the ridges around Ax-les-Thermes or Superbagnères when conditions are stable.
As for the weather, Toulouse remains mild and sunny in winter, but snow is very present at altitude from December to March, sometimes as late as April. The best times to set off are on cold mornings after a recent fall, when the snow wears well and the light is superb. In the event of milder weather or windy conditions, opt for routes through the undergrowth.
For a successful outing, remember to bring warm, breathable layers, waterproof boots, gaiters, gloves, sunglasses and sun cream. Bring water, snacks, a map or GPS track, and check the weather forecast for the massif and the avalanche risk level. Choose marked trails if you're just starting out. On the road, winter tires or chains and an early start are recommended.
Alone, with family or friends, snowshoe rental in Toulouse opens the door to an active and accessible winter. All you have to do is follow your tracks in the powder.
