Montpellier is an easy city to cycle. Much of the old town is car-free, cycle paths follow the Lez river all the way to the sea, and the beach at Palavas is about an hour's ride away. Bike shops here rent all year round: to visitors in summer, and to locals and students the rest of the time. Here is what you need to know to pick the right bike.

Vélomagg or a bike shop?

Vélomagg is the city's bike-share scheme. It works well for short trips across town: pick up a bike at one station and drop it at another. Rentals are limited to 24 hours in a row, you must be 18 or over, you pay by card and a €150 deposit is held. Prices are on the TaM website.

A rental shop makes more sense as soon as you want more than a quick hop: a day trip to the beach, a ride with children (kids' bikes, child seats, trailers), an e-bike to stay cool in the heat, a gravel or road bike, or a rental of several days or even a month.

Where to pick up your bike

• City centre and Saint-Roch station: Smile-Ebike and Les Vélopolitains. Ideal if you arrive by train.
• East, around Port Marianne: MVELO.
• South, in Lattes: Cycling Montpellier, Mondovélo and Saco Vélo. You are already on the way to the sea.
• Near the airport: Rêve de Vélo Montpellier Sud, in Mauguio.
• At the beach: M-Bike-Loc, in Palavas.

Good to know: the Comédie cycle tunnel links Place de la Comédie to Antigone in two minutes, and the Comédie car park has secure bike parking on level -3.

Bike routes from Montpellier

• Montpellier to Palavas: 14 km along the Lez, about 1 hour, 83% on greenways. The classic ride, flat and easy, even with children.
• Place de la Comédie to Odysseum: 15 to 20 minutes through Antigone and Port Marianne.
• The Rétro-Littorale cycle route to Sète: 29 km, about 2 hours, 80% on greenways, between vineyards and lagoons.
• Palavas to Sète along the coast: 43 km and almost flat, for a proper day out.
• Aigues-Mortes to Palavas: 32 km close to the shore, starting from the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes.
• Pic Saint-Loup: about twenty kilometres north, for gravel and mountain bike fans.

E-bike, gravel, cargo or mountain bike?

• E-bike: the best choice for a beach round trip (nearly 30 km), hot days, or everyday use on a monthly plan.
• Gravel: to mix the Lez riverside, lagoon tracks and the garrigue.
• Cargo bike: to take the kids to the beach or do the market run.
• Mountain bike: for Pic Saint-Loup and the hills inland.
