The Nantes-Brest Canal by bike: a gentle adventure in the heart of Brittany

The article in a nutshell

The Nantes-Brest Canal by bike is 390 km of accessible pleasure, through authentic, verdant Brittany. A perfect itinerary for families, beginners and nature lovers.

Summary

Looking for an unforgettable, accessible, family-friendly cycling trip with a change of scenery? The Nantes-Brest Canal by bike is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cycling itineraries in France.

To follow this historic waterway is to cross Brittany from one end to the other, following the water, flower-bedecked locks, charming villages and unspoilt natural landscapes. In this article, you'll find a comprehensive guide to preparing your cycling adventure on the Nantes-Brest canal, with practical tips and itinerary ideas for all levels.

Why choose the Nantes-Brest canal for your cycling trip?

An easy, signposted itinerary, perfect for beginner cyclists

With 390 km of cycle routes, mainly on green lanes and with few gradients, the canal is ideal for families, beginners and leisure cyclists. Signage is clear, continuous and signposted in both directions, thanks to the La Vélodyssée (EuroVelo 1) route. No cars, no stress: here, you pedal to the rhythm of the locks and barges, in complete safety.

Total immersion in inland Brittany

Unlike coastal circuits, this route crosses the authentic heart of Brittany. Small towns of character, shady forests, lakes, abbeys and castles dot the route. It's a journey where you'll discover a rural, green, welcoming and often little-known Brittany.

Itinerary identity card

  • Total distance: 390 km
  • Recommended duration: 4 to 7 days
  • Cumulative ascent: approx. 840 m
  • Recommended departure: Nantes (also possible from Châteaulin, in Finistère)
  • Marking: 100% signposted route via La Vélodyssée (EV1)
  • Level: easy to moderate (a few slopes around Guerlédan)

The essential stages of the Nantes-Brest Canal by bike

Nantes to Blain (~60 km)

Gentle start from Nantes, along the Erdre. First mills, first locks and a peaceful atmosphere from Nort-sur-Erdre. Blain, with its medieval castle, marks the transition to a more rural Bretagne.

Blain à Redon (~45 km)

The towpath runs alongside the Oust, with pleasant stops such as Guenrouët. In Redon, we recommend a break in the old town, at the crossroads of several cycle routes (V3, V6).

Redon to Josselin (~85 km)

A stage rich in heritage. Malestroit then Josselin are two jewels in the crown: timber-framed houses, château overlooking the canal, medieval atmosphere. A real postcard.

Josselin à Pontivy (~75 km)

This section climbs slightly, but remains accessible. Don't miss: Rohan, its quiet streets, and l'Abbaye de Bon-Repos, ideal for a contemplative break.

Pontivy à Carhaix (~90 km)

One of the most challenging sections, with climbs around lac de Guerlédan, the largest lake in Brittany. The effort is amply rewarded by the wild beauty of the site.

Carhaix to Châteaulin (~45 km)

Last straight stretch in Finistère. Arrival at Châteaulin, a peaceful town nestling in the Aulne valley.

What to see and do along the way?

  • La Gacilly photo festival (June-September): not to be missed if you're passing through Redon.
  • Lac de Guerlédan: swimming, tour of the lake by bike or on foot, water sports.
  • Château de Josselin: a must-see for young and old.
  • Abbaye de Bon-Repos: mystical setting on the banks of the canal.
  • Local markets: stop off in Pontivy or Carhaix for a taste of Breton specialties (galettes, cider, kouign-amann...).

Accommodation and practical services

Where to sleep?

  • Municipal campsites: numerous, inexpensive (~€9/night for 2 cyclists), very well located.
  • Gîtes, hotels, bed & breakfasts: often with the Accueil Vélo label.
  • Chez l'habitant: Breton hospitality is no myth. Think of Warmshowers or cycling touring Facebook groups.

Eating and shopping

  • Village groceries: frequent, but plan ahead for Sundays.
  • Crêperies and boulangeries: perfect for a local gourmet break.
  • Picnic baskets: easy to organize with local produce.

Rent a bike / logistics

  • One-way bike hire: some agencies (e.g. Canal Loisirs) allow you to drop off your bike on arrival.
  • Access by train: TER with bike area between Nantes, Redon, Carhaix, Châteaulin. Free for bikes not dismantled.

Tips for a successful experience

  1. Avoid high season if possible (July-August), quieter in June or September.
  2. Opt for waterproof panniers: the Breton climate can sometimes throw up surprises.
  3. Think of the variants: the V3 to Rennes, the V2 to the Rhuys peninsula or the V8 to Lorient offer ideal extensions.
  4. Take your time: this is a route to savor, not one to be swallowed up by the clock.
  5. Travel light but well equipped: rain gear, repair tools, sun cream and... swimsuits!

A human adventure as much as a sporting one

The Nantes-Brest Canal by bike is much more than just a route: is a reconnection with time, with nature and with others. The encounters are numerous: walkers, fishermen, families on the move, long-distance travelers... All share the same benevolence that characterizes inland Brittany.

Whether you're away for a weekend or a whole week, the Nantes-Brest canal promises an unforgettable experience. Prepare your mount, take your curiosity with you, and let yourself be carried along this magical waterway.

Enjoy your trip, and may the wind blow you in the right direction!
