Feel like pedaling in the fresh air? In Hattstatt, renting a bike makes perfect sense. This Alsatian village in the heart of the vineyards is the ideal starting point for a gentle ride through half-timbered houses, wine trails and panoramic views over the Rhine plain. Get on your bike in the village square, and the ribbon of vines will soon lead you to Eguisheim and its ramparts, Gueberschwihr and its Romanesque tower, or Rouffach and its light-filled streets. The small roads of the Véloroute du Vignoble (V53) alternate between quiet passages and farm tracks: perfect for safe riding, solo, in a duo or with the family.

Looking for a measured challenge? Head for Husseren-les-Châteaux: the climb winds through the vineyards, and with an electric bike, the view of the Trois Châteaux and the Vosges can be enjoyed without straining your muscles. More of a gourmet stroll? Take a break in the shade of a low stone wall, in the middle of the rows, for a picnic overlooking the hillsides.
