Own or rent? In 2025, the question is no longer a matter of debate for a growing number of French people.
According to an IFOP study conducted for Lokki, 64% of French people have already rented or are considering renting a capital good. That's a lot... but it's not yet a reflex.
So what's holding people back? A cultural preference for ownership, but also a lack of reference points. Nearly 30% of respondents admit they don't even know where to rent. And platforms like Lokki.rent are still relatively unknown.
🛠️ What do we rent? First and foremost, sports equipment (bikes, skis, paddle), DIY, or even events.
🧠 Why do the French rent?
To avoid an unnecessary purchase, save space, and control their budget.
😰 Why do they hesitate to rent?
For fear of damaging the equipment, or simply because they don't think about it.
But things are changing fast: 28% of French people say they want to rent more in the next 12 months. And among young people, it's even stronger: 38% among 25-49 year-olds, 40% among residents of the Paris metropolitan area.
💡 What can change everything
-
A more visible and local offer
-
A smoother online experience
-
More reassurance about the condition of equipment
What can we conclude from this study?
Renting is no longer just a passing trend. It's a mode of consumption that meets today's challenges: savings, ecology, flexibility. And tomorrow, what if we stopped buying everything we use twice a year?
